Aldo & Leonardo Art/Science Residency Project

Aldo and Leonardo artists

March 2013: On March 4 at the Sabana Research Station in El Yunque Forest, artists met with scientists at the International Institute of Tropical Forestry. These artists, five of whom are Puerto Rican, will explore Puerto Rico's El Toro Wilderness and collect data with five different researchers.

These artists are part of the Aldo & Leonardo project's first wilderness residency sponsored by the Colorado Art Ranch and the Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute. During this ongoing project, the scientists and artists - visual, literary, and performing - will collaborate to produce a body of work that creatively illustrates the value of wild areas and honors the scientific efforts to preserve wilderness. Over the next year, artist/researcher pairs will spend one-month residencies in five more wilderness biomes throughout the United States, in addition to the tropical El Toro. Overall, the project will result in a video, publication, online publication and traveling exhibition.
