January 1, 2014: New Mexico
The Cibola National Forest hosted a New Year's Day Hike into the Manzano Mountain Wilderness to kick off the 2014 celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act and the "Year of Wilderness". Student Conservation Association Intern Endion Schichtel led a 3.5 mile interpretative hike on the Trigo Canyon Trail into Cañon del Trigo on the west side of the Manzano Mountain Wilderness outside of Belen, New Mexico. Keeping the maximum group size of 10 for low impact, the group had a great time learning about the area and getting to know each other.
The Apalachicola National Forest hosted a New Year's Day hike into the Bradwell Bay Wilderness to kick off the 2014 celebration of the Wilderness Act. Wilderness and Recreation Planner Haven Cook of the National Forests in Florida led the three-mile interpretive hike on the Florida National Scenic Trail, which runs through the wilderness.
